Miu Lan wächst zunächst frei von einengenden Rollenerwartungen auf mit einer Mutter, die Miu Lan unterstützt und ein liebevolles, empowerendes Lied vorsingt. Als Miu Lan in die Schule kommt, wo es nur Jungs und Mädchen gibt, wird Miu Lan jedoch in Frage gestellt und ausgegrenzt, versucht erfolglos, sich anzupassen, findet zu Hause Trost und Stärkung und wird schließlich auch von den anderen Kindern akzeptiert und in ihren Kreis aufgenommen.
